Entry Checklist — India

Before You Apply

  • Confirm your eligibility for an Indian e-Visa. US citizens are generally eligible for e-Tourist Visas.
  • Ensure your US passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of arrival in India.
  • Confirm your passport has at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
  • Have a digital passport-style photograph ready (JPG format, size between 10 KB and 1 MB).
  • Have a scanned copy of your passport's biographical page ready (PDF format, size between 10 KB and 300 KB).
  • Plan your trip. The e-Tourist Visa allows for a maximum stay of 60 days per visit.

Application Process

  • Apply for your Indian e-Visa at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Apply no earlier than 120 days before your travel date.
  • Complete the online application form accurately at indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html.
  • Upload your digital photograph and passport scan at indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html.
  • Pay the e-Visa fee online using a credit card or debit card at indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html.
  • Print a copy of your approved e-Visa (ETA - Electronic Travel Authorization) after it is granted.

Documents Needed

  • Valid US passport with at least six months validity.
  • Printed copy of your approved e-Visa (ETA).
  • Sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in India.optional

At the Border

  • Present your passport and printed e-Visa (ETA) to the immigration officer upon arrival in India.
  • Be prepared to answer questions about your purpose of visit and intended length of stay.
  • Your fingerprints and photograph will be taken at immigration.

Fees & Payment

  • The e-Visa fee varies depending on nationality and time of year. Check the exact fee on indianvisaonline.gov.in before applying.
  • Payment can be made online using a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) or debit card.

Important Considerations

  • The e-Tourist Visa is valid for tourism, recreation, sightseeing, casual visits to meet friends or relatives, short duration medical treatment, or casual business visits.
  • The e-Tourist Visa is non-extendable and non-convertible.
  • You can avail a maximum of 3 e-Tourist Visas in a calendar year.
  • Ensure you enter India only through authorized Immigration Check Posts where e-Visa facility is available. Check the list at indianvisaonline.gov.in.
